For Whitney, her connection with horses began at age two, when she received two My Little Ponies from a young man at her second birthday party. Those My Little Ponies set in motion the course of Whitney's equestrienne life. She has been madly in love with horses since. Her interaction with the real thing was courtesy of her aunt, who owned several horses, including the first horse Whitney rode, a Shetland pony named Freckles. After that first ride, Whitney was hooked, and she took advantage of every opportunity to climb on the back of a horse. Whitney started taking riding lessons in the second grade. The natural course of events followed and, eventually, Whitney was the proud owner of her very own horse. Sadly, Whitney's new horse, Joy, did not possess the temperament necessary for a child's horse. Although she was a fine Arabian mare, she was simply unsuitable for Whitney's needs. So, Joy was sold to someone more compatible, and the search was on for another horse. Enter Pooh. Pooh was the love of Whitney's equestrienne life. Pooh and Whitney took care of each other and learned from each other. They enjoyed each other's companionship until Whitney grew too tall for Pooh's 14.2 hh frame. When Whitney finally made the difficult decision to part with Pooh, she sent Pooh to a therapeutic riding program for children with special disabilities. Now, Pooh spends her days taking care of other children who need her. At this point in Whitney's equestrienne life, she is looking for another horse. And we have every reason to believe the perfect horse awaits her...just around the corner. In the meantime, Whitney is spending time with Bee--and loving every minute of it. |
